This aerospace-inspired coaster employs an isogrid structure which helps with weight reduction while maintaining its overall strength.
By employing the isogrid structure, the mass and contact areas of the coaster is kept to a minimum to ensure your drink temperature gradient is minimal.
The Isogrid Coaster Mark 1 features a self-interlock stacking system by seamlessly aligning with one another.
With a 100mm (4") maximum diameter the coaster is sized to fit a standard 83mm (3.25") coffee mug with a 1.1 safety-factor and to evenly divide into our CNC work envelope for efficacy.
These coasters are machined from solid plates of 6061 aluminum with a T6 temper for improved strength and hardness which is often used in the aerospace and automotive industries. The parts are then sand-blasted for a textured surface finish and sent to anodize.
Lastly, we use a CO2 Lasercutter to laser the packaging box - all made in-house!
One of the areas of focus was solving for how the coasters stacked. After thorough research, we found many existing coasters are designed to either pair with a bulky case or lacked a steady alignment upon stacking.
With this in mind and in hopes of retaining our minimalistic principle where form and function are one, we designed our coasters alignment based on the
existing top-side isogrid structure mirrored perfectly to the back side.
This requires more precision in the design and manufacturing process but results in a minimalistic, yet elegant design while providing a soothing ASMR sensation upon stacking.
The final anodize color may vary between batches depending on numerous factors such as material finish,
amount and age of the dye used, time the part is left in the anodization tank, etc.
